Why I am a Chiropractor

My chiropractic story is similar to many others around the globe. I grew up like most in the western medicine model. If you were sick you went to the doctor and most likely got a pill to take. Most of the time you would feel better after and be good to go until you got sick again. While I was studying biology at the University of South Florida I started to think, there has to be something better then just popping a pill, right? My good friend and roommate at the time Christine kept telling me about chiropractic. Her dad was a chiropractor and our senior year she started working as a chiropractic assistant (CA) for a local doc. After hearing the stories I decide it was something I had to look into further. With only a few months left till graduation I took a job as a CA for the doc right down the street. I was skeptical at first but being able to see patients get better right in front of my own eyes was amazing. It wasn’t until about 3 months in that I decided it was something I had to do with my life, and this is why.

We received a call at the office from the mother of one of the little boys we were treating. We called him little John and he was 3 years old at the time. He was also very autistic, never looking anyone in the eye and repeating the same words. He had started treatment just 2 weeks prior to the phone call. I answered the phone and his mother was crying. I was nervous for a second since I had no idea who it was and why they were crying. Needless to say that defiantly didn’t happen often! After a few seconds she explained she was little Johns mom and something amazing had happened today. John for the first time looked at his mother and said “Mom can I have this?” Although it may not seem like much, it was life changing for that family. After that phone call I knew, if I could change just one families life for the better then it was something I had to do. I started chiropractic school 6 months later.

Although chiropractic is not a cure for any disease or symptom, it shows the power restoring the nervous system can have on an individual. It was that day that also powered my drive to take care of children and pregnant mothers. Everyday our knowledge of just how amazing our bodies are grows. There is new research coming out all the time supporting pediatric and pregnancy chiropractic.
